Jedn\u00e1 se o bakterii, kter\u00e1 se \u0159ad\u00ed mezi enterobakterie a je fakultativn\u011b anaerobn\u00ed, co\u017e znamen\u00e1, \u017ee se j\u00ed da\u0159\u00ed na \u010derstv\u00e9m vzduchu, ale roste i tam, kde se nevyskytuje kysl\u00edk. E. coli je jedn\u00edm z\u00a0organism\u016f, kter\u00e9 velmi ocen\u00ed v\u011bdci. Pr\u00e1v\u011b na n\u00ed byla zkoum\u00e1na r\u016fzn\u00e1 fakta t\u00fdkaj\u00edc\u00ed se bakteri\u00e1ln\u00ed genetiky a na n\u00ed se v\u0161echny domn\u011bnky prakticky zkou\u0161ely. Je to bakterie, kter\u00e1 nen\u00ed sv\u00fdm vzhledem p\u0159\u00edli\u0161 typick\u00e1, ale svou aktivitou ji\u017e ano. R\u016fzn\u00e9 druhy Escherichi\u00ed se rozd\u011bluj\u00ed podle toho, jak\u00e9 onemocn\u011bn\u00ed zp\u016fsobuj\u00ed. Nap\u0159\u00edklad zkratka EPEC znamen\u00e1 enteropatogenn\u00ed E. coli, kter\u00e1 \u010dasto zp\u016fsobuje pr\u016fjmovit\u00e1 onemocn\u011bn\u00ed u mal\u00fdch d\u011bt\u00ed. EIEC je enteroinvazivn\u00ed E. coli, kter\u00e1 zp\u016fsob buje onemocn\u011bn\u00ed, kter\u00e9 p\u0159ipom\u00edn\u00e1 bakteri\u00e1ln\u00ed \u00faplavici, kterou zp\u016fsobuje jin\u00e1 bakterie se jm\u00e9nem Shigella. Nebezpe\u010dn\u00e1 je EHEC tedy enteroheomraghick\u00e1 E. coli, kter\u00e1 je p\u016fvodcem hemolyticko-uremick\u00e9ho syndromu. Kv\u016fli tomu, jak bl\u00edzko se nach\u00e1z\u00ed an\u00e1ln\u00ed otvor u \u00fast\u00ed mo\u010dov\u00e9 trubice, je E. coli nej\u010dast\u011bj\u0161\u00edm p\u016fvodcem mo\u010dov\u00fdch infekc\u00ed. Takov\u00e9 Escherichie pak mus\u00ed b\u00fdt vybaveny je\u0161t\u011b dal\u0161\u00edmi schopnostmi, jako jsou nap\u0159\u00edklad specifick\u00e9 \u00fatvary na povrchu, kter\u00e9 jim umo\u017e\u0148uj\u00ed se udr\u017eet na mo\u010dov\u00e9m epitelu, proto se naz\u00fdvaj\u00ed UPEC, tedy uropatogenn\u00ed E. coli.
